If they were to make a toy action figure of you, what would your accessory be?

Trying my best not to say a pencil… a cup of tea probably!

To what degree have you actually controlled the course your design life has taken?
The opportunities I’ve been given have played a large part, but then winning someone’s confidence can take a lot of work too, so it’s a bit of both – initiative and a bit of good luck.

What’s something you know you do differently than most people?
I’m not really into sketch books – I like to draw on A4 printer paper. It doesn’t sound very romantic but it allows me to be not too precious, then I edit out the useless pages and scan in the rest in batches on my automatic feeder. I’ve got a speedy system going.

What product or event inspired you to be a designer/work in the design industry?
I always wanted to be a painter until I went to art college at 18 and the tutors introduced me to the other two dimensions! Neil Austin, leader of Contemporary Furniture and Related Product Design at Bucks University came to present his course to us and that was it, I wanted to be a furniture designer.

If you could become the designer of any existing item, what would you choose?
That's a tough one! Anything by Poul Kjaerholm or Pierre Paulin.

If you could go back in time and speak to your adolescent self, what advice would you give them about the design world?
Don’t be shy, the only way to understand it is to get stuck in.
